Steve's approach
toward bodywork has it's foundation in his own experiences. He has traveled
through a host of injuries on his journey from a family famous within
his hometown for pushing their bodies beyond normal human limitations
in the pursuit of success. He has spent a great deal of time in the process
determining what is effective and what is not when it comes to the body
and mind. |
What is your goal? Pain relief? Stress reduction? Performance enhancement? Each of these areas has different criteria and what may work great for muscle rehabilitation of a shoulder injury might not fill the functional needs of your goal. An injury to the rotator cuff will affect and be affected by every other part of your body, from the extra stresses to the reduced movement in adjacent areas resulting from the actual injury. Massage and bodywork need to evaluate your overall physical condition and address your goal for the session or sessions. |
An example of different approaches: Stress reduction - bodywork designed for stress reduction is generally of a softer nature. It's long flowing strokes facilitate the body's relaxation response and you are actually entering into a light trance state. Trance simply means that your mind is relaxing as well, just as it does when you read, watch television, take a walk in the woods or perform other light mental activity. Your mind and body are interlinked and each will affect the other's level of stress. By relaxing the body you relax the mind. As you relax the mind it allows the body to let go of physical tension. As the physical tension is released your energy, blood, lymph and endorphins flow more freely so the mind gets some much needed rest. See? It's a wonderful circle that, when done correctly, perpetuates itself for maximum benefit! |
Injury
and pain - bodywork designed for relief of physical ailments is often
yet not necessarily deeper and 'spot' focused. Using the rotator cuff
injury as an example, the focus of work would be on the muscles, ligaments
and tendons associated with the injured area. The length of time since
injury dictates what can be worked on safely and to what extent. The severity
of injury affects the speed of your work. Sensitivity and full blown pain
need to be addressed in the initial stages of muscle therapy. The effect
of the injury on the body overall, as well as potential contributing factors
to the injury, need to be examined to facilitate both healing and the
prevention of recurrence. Addressing just the area in pain is effective
in eliminating pain yet without fully understanding the entire impact
you may simply be bandaging the wound rather than healing it. |
Sports enhancement
- True muscle tone is firm yet soft, strong yet flexible. For complete
health and functionality the muscle must have strength without being tightened
or shortened to the point it restricts mobility. Muscle tension and tissue
bunching decrease speed, reaction time and proper utilization of blood
nutrients. They also contribute to injuries due to overuse, overstretching,
uneven stress on the body and excessive wear on joints that are impinged
by the surrounding tissue. To get maximum benefits in athletic arenas
you need to balance functional strength with functional stability, and
that's where our sports oriented bodywork session focuses. |
